The Stone Mountain CID has completed a major milestone in its efforts to enhance the efficiency and safety of the Mountain Industrial Boulevard-Highway 78 interchange.
The CID recently completed a traffic engineering report to determine the cost and benefit of multiple potential improvements. The interchange’s current configuration is often overly congested, suffers poor sight distance and offers an inadequate number of left turns, including tight turning radii for trucks exiting the Highway 78 ramps onto Mountain Industrial Boulevard. These turning issues are especially difficult for tractor trailers and other vehicles with a long wheel base.
Ultimately, the CID’s Board of Directors voted to recommend that the Georgia of Department of Transportation (GDOT) consider the installation of a new diverging diamond interchange (DDI) and related revision to the Highway 78 off-ramps. The DDI alternative is projected to help reduce crashes while greatly improving area travel times.
Meetings between CID consultants and GDOT representatives are in the works to advance a viable interchange enhancement solution.
